Highlights from the Place

Skaftafell is located in South East Iceland beneath the Vatnajökull icecap and a part of Vatnajökull National Park. It is a mountainous region, with powerful glacial rivers, black sand plateaus and graceful waterfalls. The best known waterfall in Skaftarfell is Svartifoss. Skaftarfell is renowned for good weather, as Öræfajökull glacier provides shelter for the area. There are several hiking trails from the camping site leading to, for example, Skaftarfellsjökull glacier, Svartifoss waterfall, and Hvannadalshnjúkur, the tallest peak in Iceland (2.110m).
