Highlights from the Place

Ljósastapi (The Elephant)

Located at the north eastern side of Vopnafjörður fjord is Skjólfjörur beach. It  has a rocky shore with unique colourful stones. Note there is a sign by the hiking trails to the beach asking

people not to remove any of the stones. There are many rock pillars in the Vopnafjörður fjord and quite few near the village having the same name as the fjord. One of the best known rock pillars of Vopnafjörður is Ljósastapi  which stands out in the sea close to Skjólfjörur. The locals call it “Fíllinn” or the Elephant  as at certain angles it resembles an elephant.GPS  65.755265, -14.575346
